ODME, UTI and instrument calibration
Calibration checks and servicing of ODMEs and 15 ppm bilge alarms, UTI and sounding tapes, thermal imaging cameras, pressure gauges and other measuring instruments.
Some instruments only matter when an inspector asks for the certificate: the oil discharge monitoring equipment (ODME), the 15 ppm bilge alarm, the UTI (ullage temperature interface) tape used in cargo calculations. If the calibration has expired, the instrument is legally blind, however well it works.
We check and calibrate instruments against traceable references.
Scope
Function and calibration checks on tankers, flushing arrangements and records.
Calibration accuracy checks of bilge alarms and of the oily water separator's monitoring unit.
Tape length checked against a reference tape, temperature and interface sensors, and the certificates terminals ask for.
The fire team's thermal imaging cameras are checked and serviced in accordance with the manufacturer's procedure.
Pressure gauges, temperature calibrators, dynamometers, torque wrenches and thickness gauges are compared against reference instruments, and certificates are issued.
Oxy-acetylene distribution systems: regulators, flashback arrestors, hoses and cylinder stowage, inspected as vetting inspectors expect.
Intervals
| Equipment / task | Interval | Basis |
|---|---|---|
| 15 ppm bilge alarm calibration check | At each IOPP renewal survey (5 years) | Res. MEPC.107(49), as amended |
| ODME | As required by the manufacturer and the flag state | Res. MEPC.108(49) |
| UTI and sounding tapes | Typically every 12 months, or as required by charterers and terminals | Manufacturer, company SMS |
